Umbra, brah

Umbra is our hazy IPA that showcases the bold and unique hop, Sabro. First gaining popularity around 2021, Sabro has become a polarizing choice among brewers, loved by some and disliked by others for its distinct character. When used properly, Sabro shines with bright notes of tangerine and piña colada — a perfect complement to classic hazy IPA hops like Simcoe, Citra, and Mosaic.

When selecting Sabro for Umbra, we specifically seek out lots with a fresh piña colada aroma. Many Sabro lots can carry an off-putting, artificial coconut scent — reminiscent of sunscreen — and we avoid those at all costs. Sabro is a powerful hop, and its unique profile is noticeable even at low usage rates of just 15–20%.

Sabro is part of the "Neomexicanus" family — the only native hop varieties found in America. Discovered growing wild along riversides in New Mexico, Neomexicanus hops are known for producing flavors far outside the traditional hop spectrum. One notable example is experimental hop #472, which delivered a bold oak character.

Umbra was our first recipe built around Sabro, and it’s become a staple for the spring and summer seasons. We can't wait for you to experience it!
